Lines
written on the Sixth Annual Reunion of the Descendants of William C. and C.
Eliza Coe of Durham, Ct.
Kind greeting to the house of Coe
Embraced by this ancestral shade,
And greeting to the long ago,
Whose loving Memories n’er shall fade
T’was here our cradle boat were rocked,
Upon a floor, by hands made white;
T’was here our childhood longings flocked,
And filled the brain both day and night.
T’was here the angels came, to take
Our loved, to bear them far away;
To lasting joys of heavenly make,
Within the light of living day.
Beyond the changes we have known
Beyond the shadows and the tears;
We think of them the older grown,
The Sires and Dames of other years.
Sacred this dear old home: and now
As we united stand once more
Another year with added vow
Lies like a wave along the shore.
One face has faded since we met
One soul has entered Heaven’s ranks
But mother lives among us yet
For which we give our heartfelt thanks.
Six times we’ve gathered ‘neath this tree
God grant we gather many more
While blessings fall on all most free
And Love unites us as of yore.
