CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING
ANNIVERSARY IN OLD FAMILY
HOMESTEAD
On Sunday Mr. And Mrs. W. T. Coe will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter, Mrs. John R. Smith, in Durham. At present there are twenty-two immediate members of the family and they will be on hand for the lunch which will be served at 12 o’clock. From 1 to 3 a reception will be held and then Mr. And Mrs. Coe will leave with their daughter, Mrs. Edna Doane and her husband of Springfield, Mass., On an automobile trip to Springfield, where they will visit for a few days.
Mr. Coe is a descendant of Robert Coe who was born in Suffolk, England, in 1596. His wife, Anna, was born in 1591. With three sons they sailed from Ipswich, Suffolk, in the ship, Francis, April 10, 1634, arriving in Boston in June if that year, and settling in Watertown, near Boston. The first Coe in Durham was Lieutenant Joseph Coe, son of John Coe, of Stratford, who was a grandson of Robert Coe, who came from England. This Joseph Coe was one of the proprietors or first settlers, of Durham, in about 1700. Mr. Coe is of the ninth generation from Robert Coe, the founder of the family in America, his line of descent being: First, Robert Coe, born in 1596; second, Robert, born in 1627; third, John, born in 1658; fourth, John, born in 1693; fifth, Simeon, born in 1721, who married Annie Morris, daughter of Adonijah Morris from the Morris family came, through Simeon Coe, the present homestead in Durham; sixth, Timothy, born in 1746; seventh, Timothy, born in 1781; eighth, William C., born in 1808, father of William T. Coe.
William Callendar Coe, the father of Mr. Coe, was born in Haddam, where his parents lived for a short time. They returned to Durham when he was a few months old and located on the farm now occupied by William T. Coe. On February 11, 1811, William C. Coe married Caroline E. Allen in Wallingford, daughter of Ebenezer and Sally Kimberly Allen. To them were born four children, of whom William T. is the youngest, born May 29, 1844, in Durham.
Just fifty years ago Sunday, Mr. Coe married Harriet A. Barnes, of New Haven, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. William Barnes, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Mr. Loomis. She was born in New Haven in 1847, and for a few years after their marriage Mr. And Mrs. Coe lived in that city. For forty-five years or more, however, they have lived in the Coe homestead in Durham.
To them have been born the following children: Mrs. Hester E. Smith, Clifford W. Coe, Mrs. Edna Doane of Springfield, Mass., Mrs. Mabel Rich and Mrs. Mildred Rich. With the grandchildren there are just twenty two in the family.
